Dr. Robert Fechhelm is a senior fisheries biologist and marine ecologist who has been with LGL for 20 years. He has conducted extensive research into the effects of nearshore and deepwater petroleum exploration and development on biological resources of the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska. Dr. Fechhelm has been involved in several major integration, synthesis, and assessment efforts pertaining to oil and gas development including "Environmental Trends in the Gulf of Mexico in the 20th Century: The Role of the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry" for the American Petroleum Institute, the "Endicott Development Project Synthesis (1991-1996)" for BP Exploration (Alaska), Inc., and "Selected Aspects of the Ecology of the Continental Slope Fauna of the Gulf of Mexico" for Minerals Management Service. He also served as the technical director for the "Arctic Anadromous Fish Database" compiled for Standard Alaska Production Company. The 2-year project included the review of 1,200 scientific publications, state and federal government reports, and consultant reports of limited distribution from which geographically and taxonomically relevant fisheries data were compiled as source material for subsequent environmental assessment studies.
Dr. Fechhelm also has considerable experience in preparing NEPA documents relating to EA and EIS developments. He was the principal author for the sea turtle background section of an EIS for the U.S Navy regarding the expansion of their Point Magu Sea Test Range off the coast of southern California; the principal author for the sea turtle background section of an EA for a planned 2-year deployment off Hawaii of a strong but intermediate source of low-frequency sound; co-author of the marine and freshwater biological background and impact assessment sections of an EA that addressed the potential effects of a U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command helicopter training airspace situated off the northwestern coast of Florida; principal author for the freshwater fish background section, and co-author of the marine and freshwater fish cumulative impact sections of a 30-year update EA of the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline System; and co-author of three cumulative impact sections for and EIS relating to the National Marine Fisheries Service's North Pacific ground fisheries management plan. Dr. Fechhelm has authored 78 scientific papers and reports including 24 publications in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. |
