Capsule Resume

Sylvia is a recent graduate of the Fisheries research group within SFU's School of Resource and Environmental Management. There, she gained valuable quantitative skills in fisheries stock assessment and conducted her Master's research on adaptive rotational harvest for invertebrate dive fisheries. Working collaboratively with DFO and harvesters, she also conducted a scientific review of the sea cucumber fishery in B.C., developed an experimental protocol to test rotational harvest, and presented her report's management recommendations to the Pacific Scientific Advise Review Committee (PSARC).

In addition to outstanding writing and analytical skills, Sylvia has a broad range of field experience. In the marine environment, she has participated in experimental dive fisheries for sea cucumbers, worked on DFO surveys for zooplankton, groundfish, and juvenile salmon, and conducted a field experiment on kelp fertilization in Barkley Sound. In the freshwater environment, Sylvia has experience in fish habitat assessments, fish salvage, construction monitoring, and stream restoration projects. She developed a field manual and course material for urban stream mapping, for the Sensitive Habitat Inventory and Mapping (SHIM) committee. Sylvia is also interested in wildlife and has worked as a technician on Spotted Owl surveys in the B.C. interior, and on seabird research programs on Triangle Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands. At LGL, Sylvia is involved in a wide range of projects for the Nisga'a Fisheries Program, an assessment of salmon returns in the Fraser River system, an analysis of the potential benefits and impacts of National Marine Conservation Areas on First Nations treaty negotiations in BC, and environmental assessment projects.
