W. John Richardson, Ph.D. , Executive Vice President of LGL, is a specialist in bird migration and hazards to aircraft; noise disturbance to marine mammals and other wildlife; and the design, conduct and interpretation of field studies in support of environmental assessments. His academic training was in animal behaviour. Much of Dr. Richardson's research, since the mid-1960s, has concerned bird hazards to aircraft and bird movements over many parts of Canada, the U.S.A., and Puerto Rico. He is internationally known for his work on the effects of weather on the timing and characteristics of bird movements, including radar and visual stud-ies, analyses, and reviews. His recent bird hazard to aircraft work has included landfill studies and analyses of the circumstances of serious birdstrike accidents. John also specializes in studies of disturbance to wildlife. Since 1980 he has directed several large field studies of marine mammal reactions to various types of industrial activities, including aircraft, shipping, icebreaking, marine construction and drilling, and seismic exploration. He is senior author of the book Marine mammals and noise (1995, Academic Press). In 1992-94 he was a member of the U.S. National Research Council committee on low-frequency sound and marine mammals. He chairs the independent Advisory Board reviewing EIS documents, research plans and research results concerning the environmental effects of the controversial ATOC ocean acoustics project.
