Intermediate/Senior Ornithologist — St. John's, NL

INTERMEDIATE/SENIOR ORNITHOLOGIST
LGL Limited – St. John's, NL

LGL is accepting applications for a career-oriented, intermediate- or senior-level ornithologist in our St. John’s office. We conduct research and environmental assessments for a wide variety of clients in Canada, the U.S.A., and beyond. The successful candidate will work as a member of our existing office-based team. This is a full-time position with travel and fieldwork requirements.

Qualifications & Experience: The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate abilities and experience consistent with the following minimum qualifications:

  • MSc or PhD in a field related to avian ecology
  • a strong background in marine bird ecology
  • familiarity with the identification and general distribution and ecology of birds of Atlantic Canada
  • familiarity with provincial, regional, and federal regulations concerning impact assessment
  • solid working knowledge of statistical software such as R, and an ability to apply univariate and multivariate statistical methods to ecological data
  • competent writer with strong word-processing skills
  • willing and able to travel for work

The ideal candidate has relevant experience:

  • working outdoors in the marine and land environments of Atlantic Canada
  • completing avifauna inventory, ecological and behavioural projects
  • working on projects involving impact assessment and monitoring
  • working with a variety of field and office equipment
  • using a variety of software packages
  • analyzing and interpreting data
  • writing reports and/or publications
  • writing research proposals

MID- TO SENIOR-LEVEL WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST/ECOLOGIST

LGL is accepting applications for a career-oriented fulltime Wildlife Biologist/Ecologist in our Sidney, BC, office. LGL Limited is one of North America’s premier ecological research and consulting firms. Our scientists conduct research, monitoring, and environmental assessments for a variety of clients in Canada, the United States, and beyond.

Much of our work involves providing technical support and advice to our long-term Indigenous clients faced with the prospect of industrial developments in their treaty areas and traditional territories. The successful candidate will be a team player – thoroughly experienced in the application of ecological principles and practices, with an emphasis on Indigenous relations in the context of federal and provincial environmental assessments.

To succeed in this position, you must be business-minded, motivated, and flexible. An ongoing commitment to reliable and competent service to colleagues and clients is essential. The position entails office time, inter-regional collaboration, and fieldwork involving travel and working in remote areas.

The successful candidate demonstrates abilities and experience consistent with the following minimum requirements:

  • MSc with specialization in natural resources focusing on the terrestrial flora and fauna of western Canada
  • Registered Professional Biologist or eligible for such
  • At least 7 years of experience in natural resources research and management – preferably in a consulting role
  • At least 5 years of experience working in the field of environmental assessment and able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the full scope of provincial and federal EA processes
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience developing and managing complex projects, including budgets, schedules, and deliverables
  • Valid driver’s license
